Welcome to “Back to Basics-Give Back”!

Hi, I am Anna Jimenez, your 2009-10 Independence Elementary School PTA President.    I am very excited to
have the honor of serving on your IES PTA!  The PTA is rich in history as we celebrate the 100th year of the
Texas PTA and so we choose to follow the Texas PTA’s motto for our school year:  “Get Back to Basics.”  The
idea comes from Ella Caruthers who started a moms' group in 1896 which became adopted in 1909 as the
Texas Congress of Mothers and Parent-Teacher Association.  Ella wanted to make sure that her children
received all the benefits of their education that they should, while at the time she also sought advice and
encouragement from other parents in her community.

Our theme for the year is giving back.  Giving back to the school, families, and communities and teaching our
children to do the same through giving back.  How do we plan to do that?  We want to encourage each family
this year to take part in membership.  Each family member needs a membership – moms, dads,
grandparents, even older siblings above 9th grade.  Your membership - just $6.00 per member - gives back
to the PTA.  It helps us continue the long tradition of parents and teachers working together to ensure the
success of each child’s education.

Secondly, give back by getting involved.  We want to build a community within our school to be able to reach
out to each other and find support.  As a parent, there are times when it gets very crazy with schedules, work,
and trying to balance everything.  I have felt lonely and lost at times but as I have gotten involved, I have found
other parents out in the community who know what I am going through.  By being involved, I have gotten to
know these parents and have found common ground and begun to establish many new friendships.
Involvement is a great way to build friendships and find support –Try IT!  We Meet Friday mornings for Maverick
Math and also every 2nd Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m.  Come to our Father/daughter event, or the
mother/son event – you will meet other parents trying to figure it all out, too!

Thirdly, give back by supporting our events and fundraisers.  In order for us to bring FUN events and programs
for the kids, we have to raise funds.   We wish we did not have to ask but the reality is we cannot get around it.
So please send in Campbell’s Labels/Box Tops.  This helps us raise funds for the PTA and you do not have
to spend a lot.  Other ways:  do you own a business or work for a business in the community that is willing to
sponsor or help schools and PTA.?  Let us know - even discounts to offer to other parents are giving back!
Last if you can support our fundraising- Awesome!  We need your support and that means in whatever area of
support you can help us we thank you as it all goes to benefit the school, teachers and kids!

PTA is a volunteer organization.  Volunteers are the heart and soul that keep the PTA alive.  We understand
that everyone has busy schedules, different work schedules, after school activities but even 1 hour can make
a difference.  With over 700 students at IES, we have many parents. If we could have one volunteer for each
student volunteer 1 hour that would be 700 volunteer hours which equals 17 “40 hour weeks” worth of time
given back to the students and teachers. If we were able to double or triple the time we could volunteer, we
could give 34 or 51 weeks worth of time to help our teachers invest more quality time with our children.  Now
is not giving just even 1 hour worth it!  IF you can, please "Give Back" through volunteering. Our students will
benefit, the teachers will benefit and our school will be the Best!

Let's get "Back to Basics-Give Back” in the 2009-10 school year!
